Životinje simboliziraju bogatstvo prirodnog svijeta, čistoću i nevinost, u doslovnom smislu prirodnost. Život čovjeka u zajednici (pripadnost i usvajanje kulturnih obilježja, razvoj identiteta zajednice) prikazujem kroz portrete djece.

Behemoth

///

Istočno nebo (Eastern sky)

Project "Visions of the underworld" (series of exhibitions) is the initial point of my research of human mortality and finitude, and accordingly, survival, spirituality, and the human desire to enter eternity. I focus on childhood and children as the newly awakened generation to bring significant changes to this world, creating paintings as intimate myths.

The myth appears as nostalgia for the fantasy of the past, because of anxious uncertainty  of the future which corresponds to apocalyptic consciousness of post-historical man. „Retrieving myth is possible only when the world no longer has its foundation, becoming scientific formation without secrecy“ (Žarko Paić). Therefore, overseeing past is the consequence of that uncertainty, as reaching for a well known and safe haven. Remembrance provokes nostalgic wince which, like a bridge, leads us to transhistorical space where we never stop moving on the path between childhood and adulthood.

Myth as one-time epochal event has features of initial (arché) and the original, just as the visions of a "underworld" represent the primordial man. In various world cosmologies and cosmogonies similar patterns are found - the world is divided into three parts: the lower, middle and upper world. They are related to one another and are connected to world axis (Axis Mundi). The underworld is a "place" in our conscious where the individual psyche encounters primordial archetypal currents of human existence and nature. It is a place where individual searches for the deepest causes of various forms of disharmony and disturbed balance, and performs the transformation, consolidates chaos and opens the door to the hidden human potentials.

Through this lower layer I investigate the duality of our world, the basic elements of our existence - the relationship between nature and human life. I refer to these polarities in dyptich „Visions of the underworld“. The nature described in painting „Eastern sky“ does not resemble anything "natural", mainly because of the absence of human (human vision of nature is dependent of physiological limits of the eye, anyway). Avoiding mimetic, literal description of space enhances the "stepping out of time," departure from the historical context and the past. Animals symbolize the richness of the natural world, purity and innocence, in the literal sense naturality. Man's life (belonging, adoption of cultural traits, identity development in community) is represented in „Behemoth“ by portraying group of children. It is a representation of modern society as the sum of the masses in which an individual finds its purpose only in the service of the entirety. Hybridity as the characteristic of the postmodern era of fluid identities, reflects in the „physiognomy“ of the man – in this painting it is the dotty grid, which hides not only the physical appearance of a man but his being, his nature of "generic entity" (whose life is based on the relationship between man and nature). In techno-optimistic environment he becomes like Behemoth, a mythical creature of darkness and depth - the "magical scepter that controls hidden worlds".  This leads to chaotic and disorderly living. It is the obstacle to humanity's effort to "survive", that is, to prolong life in a perpetual quest for eternity.

The question is why do we desire immortality, instead of accepting the temporality and end? What kind of a world would it be whith no "charm in transience“? "When the end is near, the images keep disappearing, and only words remain," said J.L.Borges. However, it is the images, the memories, we cherish until the end and they are witnesses of the flow of time, our reminder of the end soon to come. In that way, memories make us who we are, childlike warriors looking for the lost time in the underworld.

Iva Potočnik - FROM THE ORIGIN / OD ISHODIŠTA:

* For exhibition "Overlaps" with L.Herceg and S.Đurinec

Although they have contemporary art world-view, three young authors have focused their creative energy to research the past - the universal, collective, and that of individual, intimate character. Wondering trough layered visual language in order to create visual link between the art forms and the individual, artists create unusual dimension in which they primarily find their own identity. In space they form these dimensions in a final way, as the current view of the origin of their inspiration. By combining the techniques they question the dialogue between real and surreal, and between what we mean now and what we meant before. An intensive search for affirmation of the individual to totality moves through the various techniques of surface decomposition, the construction of plastic masses, or the revival of unidentified characters. Eternal artistic concern – quest  for the lost time is viewed through the prism of younger generation aware that without a genuine context, there is no proper motion.
Vanja Trobić focuses on the problem of individual identity in the environment. Observing times we live in as a phase in which materialism dominates over spirituality, artist works through a set of questions: what am I as an isolated individual, and what as an integral part of society? Collective responsibility in seeking answers is just one of the key problems in fast pace of life? Combining multiple canvases of different colors, and collages of various characters, the author penetrates the membrane of existential crisis and enters into the field of artistic limbo. In this area disorientation of lonely figures on the canvases without spatial deepness remaines unattainable. They are unidentified, lost in cold coloured surfaces on the track between childhood and adulthood, thereby distracting the viewer into a mystical world of inspiring dreams.

In his text Camera Lucida, Barthes says that photography, as the only material evidence of irreversible past, derives its power and its cultural importance by being deeply rooted in the traditional role of the family. However, he is aware that there is something in photography completely inaccessible - such as the inability of the reconstruction of the physiognomy and habits of referents. Function which is in the process of constructing identity taken over by a family album / portrait, testifies about our attachment to representational forms and acceptance of cultural codes. Can photography function like a personal reminder of the loved ones? Is it really able to reconstruct our image of these people, does it really strengthen our memories of specific events or simply prove that they occurred, sometimes at personal history?
Vanja’s intimate act formed in series of 50 personal memories / family portraits, “going out” to public space, turns out just as deconstruction, stripping and playing with the cultural codes. People, animals and objects that were in her life were the carriers of individual memories, identities, are now becoming actors of a new reality. Their poses, on the other hand, belong to universal rhetoric gestures, conventions that define the ways in which the photography had to be performed. Using family photos as templates for kind of remembering exercise, Vanja takes “photos” again. She does it almost literally, using the media of analog photos, which she then scannes and digitally restructures. She manipulates their faces, hiding their sights primarily through the grid point (because the eyes are the mirror of the soul").
The sight is the most important segment: view between the camera and subjects; mutual views of the characters; sight between the observer and photos - all becomes questionable by this simple intervention. In this way, works get almost industrial texture, like the mass produced images. Deleting the identity then becomes a reference point, more tangible than real characters. Identity is fluid anyway, unmarked, manipulative. It is a process that examines not only the concept of the family, but examines already established forms of representation. Therefore, Vanja provides a new framework for family portraits, not the golden one, but the framework of her own interpretations.
